What’s a kiln god?
For centuries, potters have imagined “kiln gods” as spirits that protect the kiln and ensure successful firings. Because firing has always involved uncertainty — temperatures may run too high or too low, reduction can go wrong, and glazes can produce unexpected results —many potters have relied on ritual and tradition for good luck.
In China, Japan, and Europe, potters made offerings, honored kiln traditions, and treated the firing process with deep respect.
Today, kiln gods are often playful studio mascots or small sculptures kept near the kiln for good luck. They remind us that every firing holds a little mystery.
Kiln gods symbolize transformation, creativity, resilience, and respect for fire.
